Lincoln Hefty® EnergyBag® Program
Nearly 40,000 Lincoln households will soon receive initial complimentary Hefty® EnergyBag® starter kits in the mail from their recycling hauler
The Lincoln Solid Waste and Recycling Association and Firstar Fiber, Inc. are launching the Hefty® EnergyBag® program to support the city’s aims of keeping more materials out of landfills and improving the quality of its recyclables. Lincoln was one of two organizations awarded a $40,000 Hefty® EnergyBag®Grant in December 2018.
The program enables households to significantly increase material recovery and reduce waste going to our landfills in the greater Omaha area.
The program can be easily added to residents’ existing curbside recycling routines, with no need to sign up. Residents simply fill their Hefty® EnergyBag® orange bags with clean, used plastics that cannot be recycled by traditional means. Examples include plastic wrap, zip-top bags, foam to-go containers, plastic cups, straws and lids. Once full, residents put the distinctive Hefty® orange bags inside their recycling carts for collection by their existing recycling hauler. These materials can then be converted to useful resources, like synthetic diesel fuel, oils, waxes and lubricants.
Lincoln residents will be mailed four-bag starter kits by participating recycling haulers, with deliveries beginning in May. Participating haulers are Alleycat Disposal and Recycling, Capital City Refuse, D&D Refuse, Husker Refuse, Kurtzer Brothers Refuse, Niederhams Refuse Inc., Paragon Sanitation, Uribes Refuse Services, and Zajicek Refuse Inc.
