January 2017 saw carton recycling hit a major milestone!  Today, 60 percent of U.S. households have access to carton recycling through their local recycling programs.  According to the Federal Trade Commission green guidelines, this means that food and beverage cartons can now carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo. First Star Recycling was proud to be the first Materials Recovery Facility in the area (and the only one in Nebraska!) to add cartons to their process.

As a Carton Council member, First Star us committed to environmentally sustainable practices throughout the entire life-cycle of a carton package.  By producing sustainable and carbon smart products made mainly from a renewable resource; consumers can wisely select cartons as one of the best package choices to meet their food and environmental needs.

  • Cartons are made mainly from paper.  The paper in cartons comes from growing forests where trees planted are replaced by new ones and biodiversity is maintained.
  • Cartons are light-weight and have a great product to package ratio.  If you choose a product in a carton, you are taking home an average of 94% product and only 6% packaging
  • Products packaged in cartons are transportation efficient.  In general, the same amount of product can be shipped in fewer trucks.  Fewer trucks = less fuel = less green house gas emissions
  • Big or small, recycle them all!  Cartons are recyclable, where collection and facilities exist.  First Star Recycling is proud to provide carton recycling to the area
