First Star Recycling’s Community Outreach & Recycling Education (C.O.R.E.) Program uses a variety of approaches to inform and educate students, employees and community participants about waste reduction, recycling and managing our resources. Specifically targeted to the interests of your group, and available in person or online, our outreach staff are available to give you the in’s and out’s about what goes on in the world of recycling. Education for Schools & Youth Groups

Our school outreach program seeks to educate students about waste reduction and responsible environmental behaviors through the “3 Rs” concept (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) and delivers engaging presentations and activities based on the age and learning stage of the student. These presentations can work alongside many different subjects and themes of learning and can be targeted to fit within teacher’s learning plans. Some examples are as follows:

Pre-K - 2nd Grade
Introduces the 3R’s. Explains why we recycle and engages children in recycling right! Teaches the basic recycled materials such as paper, cardboard, plastic and metals and what they can be turned into.

3rd - 5th Grade
Introduces the concepts of natural resources and why we should conserve them by recycling or reusing our materials. Demonstrates the concept of a Mechanical Recovery Facility and sorting out the materials. Describes the effect of conservation and pollution

Middle School
Gives students an insight into what happens to their recycling once it leaves their homes, what happens in a Mechanical Recovery Facility and the journey that products make as part of the circular economy. Introduces the concepts of buying recycled and supply and demand. Identifies the environmental impacts of poor waste management and the benefits of making informed choices.

Highschool
A deeper dive into the impact of waste management methods on the environment and the effect this has on sustainability and resource availability. Teaches about the cost of manufacturing from raw resources versus recycled materials. Delves into the technologies used at the Mechanical Recovery Facility and topics like “wishcycling” and contamination.

Career Day Presentation
Gives students an overview of the many career paths available within the recycling industry, across all levels of educational achievement. From forklift driver to robotics engineer, to sustainability professional. This presentation highlights different roles and the impact they have. Highlights personnel who have moved up the ranks to come successful leaders at First Star.

 

Community Presentations

Available to HOA’s and other interested community groups, our Recycling Professionals are available to give your group a chance to get to know the in’s and out’s of recycling and have all their questions answered. We provide an overview of our facility, how it works, and what residents can do with that one particular item they never knew if it could be recycled or not!

Business Groups & Employee Training

First Star offers on-site recycling training to our commercial recycling clients. One of our resource management professionals will visit your work space and speak to employees about implementing your specific waste management program. This may include demonstrating new industrial recycling processes to warehouse personnel, teaching office workers what can and cannot be recycled from the break room, or any other training relevant to your waste management plan.
